HOI-ASTD

Empowering professionals in the heart of Illinois with a wealth of resources from around the world.

With predicted employee shortages and growing competition for talent, there is little doubt that an educated and engaged workforce is vital to the success of any business or organization. Unfortunately, time and budgets have also been in short supply, impacting opportunities for professional development.

There is, however, an affordable local resource dedicated to the vision of positively enhancing the performance and effectiveness of all organizations in the heart of Illinois through the power of workplace learning. From small business owners to corporate trainers, independent consultants and workplace managers, the Heart of Illinois Chapter of the American Society for Training & Development (HOI-ASTD) invites all professionals interested in learning and performance to experience quality information and support in the following ways:

  • Relevant professional programs on timely topics
  • The exchange of innovative practices
  • Improved access to local resources
  • Mentoring relationships.

Who is HOI-ASTD?
Headquartered in Peoria, HOI-ASTD welcomes members from organizations across the Tri-County Area. A volunteer board of directors schedules speakers and training programs, governs the chapter, and sets chapter goals. Monthly programs cover a variety of relevant topics ranging from engaging learners and employees to coaching and training, personal branding to social media. “Meet & Mingle” evening programs are offered throughout the year to provide a casual environment for members to engage with their peers.

The year culminates with the annual Employee Learning Conference, held during the first week of December. Last year’s conference focused on the role of informal learning in the workplace and featured keynote speaker Justin Cohen, a renowned author and motivational speaker from South Africa, as well as six breakout sessions, vendor booths, and networking opportunities.

About ASTD
One bonus of local chapter involvement is the broader opportunity to connect with other professionals and a wealth of resources through ASTD at the national and international levels. ASTD is the world's largest association dedicated to the training and development profession. Members come from over 100 countries, represent more than 120 U.S. chapters and over 16 international partners, and work in thousands of organizations of all sizes, in government, as independent consultants and as suppliers.

The mission of ASTD is to empower professionals to develop knowledge and skills successfully. The organization:

  • Provides resources for training and development professionals, educators, and students—research, analysis, benchmarking, online information, books and other publications.
  • Brings professionals together in conferences, workshops and online.
  • Offers professional development opportunities for training practitioners, from a job bank and career center to certificate programs and the only credential offered in the field: the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP).
  • Serves as the voice of the profession to the media and to public policymakers in the U.S., and collaborates with other associations, organizations and educational institutions to advance the profession.
  • Recognizes excellence and sets the standard for best practices in learning and performance.
