This month, Peoria will be visited by Uruguayan multi-disciplinary artist Marisa Bernotti, whose work has been internationally recognized for addressing women’s rights and promoting children’s literature. Bernotti’s visit is the result of her involvement in the I Found U global collective of interdisciplinary artists—where she connected with Peoria-based artist and Bradley University professor Heather Brammeier.
Bernotti is “obsessed” with colors and their contrasts. “I sleep in green, I walk in blue, I think in yellow, I make love in fuchsia… My mind is saturated.” Inspired by the history of indigenous peoples, Latin American culture and European artistic work, Bernotti explores our collective perception of one another through works on canvas, papers, books, textiles and more.
During her week in Peoria, Bernotti will be part of several community arts events, including a residency at the Peoria Art Guild where she will present a number of workshops. The first is a sculptural mixed-media workshop for adults on August 9, with a “Journaling to De-Stress” workshop for teenagers the following day. An exhibition of her work, entitled “Reflective Noise,” will be on display at the Peoria Art Guild through August 28, with an opening reception on Friday, August 6. Bernotti will also be painting a new mural as part of the “Hello Peoria” public art project in Peoria’s Warehouse District—a collaboration between Big Picture Initiative, Bradley University and the City of Peoria. The mural depicts a set of stairs as a metaphor for how we, as humans, change over time due to forces both in and out of our control. The public is invited to view her work the weekend of August 7, weather permitting.
