Renewable Energy: Supply & Delivery

If you are approached to sign up for community solar, here are some things to keep in mind.

Community solar refers to local solar facilities shared by multiple subscribers who receive credit on their electricity bills for their share of the power produced.

Illinois law has made it easier for consumers to obtain power from renewable sources. A new concept known as community solar is enabling some customers to receive the benefits of renewable energy without having to install solar panels or special generation equipment.

Community Solar Options
As more renewable energy is generated, an increasing number of Illinois consumers are being contacted by marketing companies or energy developers with offers to subscribe to receive a portion of the energy produced by a community solar facility. Some of these marketers may indicate that Ameren Illinois customers are eligible to receive solar power. They may provide directions on how to enroll an existing account so that energy bills can be properly credited for the portion of solar energy you subscribe to.

It is important to remember that Ameren Illinois is not affiliated with any company that markets any source of energy supply, including solar. We are the energy delivery company that owns and manages the poles and wires and technology that delivers energy to homes and businesses. If you are approached by an energy marketer with an offer to sign up for community solar, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • An energy marketer should never imply that they are working for Ameren or partnering with Ameren in order to obtain your business. This is a fraudulent practice and should be reported to the Illinois Commerce Commission.
  • An energy marketer should never pressure you to make a decision quickly.
  • You should carefully read the fine print on any offer you receive.
  • The Illinois Commerce Commission maintains a list of certified installers and energy marketers. Make sure that the company contacting you is registered.
  • Only after you have verified the validity of the company and their offer is it okay to provide your account number to an energy marketing company.
  • If you have questions or need guidance, contact Ameren at (800) 755-5000 or by email at renewablesillinois@ameren.com.
