Shawna Knapp

FGM Architects

As a senior associate with FGM Architects, Shawna Knapp has numerous responsibilities, including serving as a project manager; developing marketing leads for new projects; working with owners to create building programs and develop construction budgets; coordinating project requirements with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers throughout the construction document phase; and managing projects during the construction phase. She has many office management duties as well, such as approving invoices to clients and billings from consultants, managing staff workloads, and communicating with clients and employees.

Knapp has always had a passion for mentoring architectural college students, interns and recent graduates, teaching about the many aspects of architecture beyond the design fundamentals on which college coursework is focused. Knapp takes it upon herself to educate young architects about interaction with clients, building long-term relationships, the importance of communication with clients and consultants, understanding the architect’s role in managing and leading the design team, and interacting with contractors.

Her selfless attitude is evident in all that she does, both professionally and in the community. Last October, Extreme Home Makeover Home Edition selected her to serve as the architect for the new home that was built for the Grys family in Pekin. Using innovation and creativity, Knapp was able to design a home fit for the entire family.

When diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2005, Knapp vowed to become the new face of MS by using the latest medicines, keeping up with the latest research, and going to local support group meetings and physical therapy. When faced with roadblocks, whether health- or work-related, Knapp deals with them head-on and strives to turn them into opportunities. She is currently working with the National MS Society to pass legislation making life insurance available for those with MS.

Knapp has received several awards, including the Peoria Jaycees 2009 Prescott E. Bloom Memorial Distinguished Service Award and the 25 Women in Leadership Award from News 25. She currently serves as a Women in Leadership Executive Board Member, a Pathway to Success Chair, and on the planning committee for the annual Carnivale event. Her passion for motorcycles motivated Knapp to form a group called Peoria Women Riders, despite her physical limitations. iBi
