Airport Issues

Air Fare Awareness Tips

We've all seen or heard the advertisements, "Fly to (enter your favorite destination here) for $99!" But do we really know what that entails? Let's take a look at the purchasing process outlined below, which provides additional cost factors not included in the promotional fare:

  • Prices are most likely for one way.
  • Be aware of standard charges like airport and governmental taxes and fees. Low-cost carriers normally don't include any fees with their published or Web advertised prices. The other carriers most likely are showing you a price that includes these fees.
  • Fare sales may be for one or two days, certain days may not apply, most holidays are blocked, travel must be completed by a specific date, and a minimum number of days advance booking is required. But if you're flexible with your schedule, a sale can save you money. With low-cost carriers, you may be able to book closer to your travel date. The major carriers usually require advance booking, and the earlier the better.
  • Many sale tickets aren't refundable, and there's a charge for any changes. Make certain you know your options if you have to cancel your trip before you pay. Your local travel agency is a great resource.
  • There are a limited number of seats available at the "sale" fare, so book early.
  • The major carriers offer value-added programs. They reward loyal passengers with accrued bonus miles that can be used to upgrade your current flight or even get a free ticket to fly later. Most of these programs are free and offer their members exclusive specials. A few low-cost carriers also offer similar programs; however, their programs don't transfer between other airlines.
  • Most low-cost carriers don't have agreements with other carriers.
  • Low-cost carriers usually won't require a Saturday night stay. With other carriers, if you can stay a Saturday night, you may save more.

Something else to consider is time. Anyone with a Web connection can supposedly find the "lowest fare" in minutes. However, to truly find the best rates, you need to take a significant amount of time, and even then, you may not be sure you've gotten the best rates. Most travel agencies now have software on their reservation systems that instantly searches dozens of air and hotel booking engines. They can also provide travel expertise and assist you during your travel.

Also, if you live in the area and travel to another airport, how much time are you investing in your transportation just to get to the airport? Is there a parking free? As the price of gas continues to climb, you need to factor all your true costs when choosing an airport for your travel needs.

There are great deals out there; however, those deals are based on your time and travel needs. But remember, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." So be sure to utilize our awareness tips when shopping around for the best deal. IBI
