The GPRA to Renovate Parking Lot
It’s been a very busy month for us at the airport. We’re excited to announce the $3.8 million terminal parking lot expansion and rehabilitation has begun. The local contractor, RA Cullinan & Son, a division of United Contractors Midwest, will perform the work in three phases to minimize the inconvenience to our passengers and their guests. This phasing allows us to utilize the terminal parking lot while work is being done, even during the holiday season. Construction is anticipated to be completed by late spring 2004, weather permitting. The project will expand the existing terminal parking lot by one-third of its current size and will increase the number of parking spaces by 25 percent, making the total of available parking spaces 1,927, with the inclusion of some green space.
We’re also adding lighted shuttle bus shelters, which we hope will offer some protection from the weather. The lot will have new cameras and lighted walkways to enhance safety for our passengers. It will enhance the user’s ability to access and exit the lot with ease. When the project is complete, free parking will mean much more.
Working with our board, we continue to work diligently to improve the airport’s infrastructure and your experience at the airport. We want to thank our state legislators for their support of 80 percent of the funding. Also, the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission provided a landscaping design theme, which will provide travelers with a fresh new look that will include spacious turn-around areas. Since the airport is considered the "front door" to our community, we intend to make it a pleasing experience.
During actual construction, there will be designated "no parking" zones so the project can proceed on schedule. Signs are posted in the parking lot area directing users to available parking. Due to the number of construction workers and equipment moving in and about the parking lot area, remember to allow enough time to park your vehicle when you visit us at the airport.
