Learning and Earning for Life
“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Strength comes in many forms and can be acquired in many ways. Developing and building our personal strengths is what makes us self-reliant, and self-reliance is an important and needed value in our own lives and in our community.
“Learning and earning” may sound like a catch phrase, but they’re two very important building blocks to building self-reliance and helping others live on their own while gaining the skills they need to get through life. Individuals taking these necessary steps are helped through a variety of programs that center on planning, action steps, and goal setting.
Whether it’s going back to school or money management, those on the search for self-reliance have many avenues available to them. Options include childcare so parents can earn an education and a living, job training skills that include resume writing and learning interview skills, and services that link individuals with employment needs throughout the community.
Self-reliance programs help everyone at all stages of life reach their potential and develop long-term practices that lead to improving their quality of life for themselves, their families, and their communities. From helping seniors live independently to helping those with physical and mental disabilities find employment and homes, it’s important that, as a community, we be an active and visible participant in helping others reach their fullest potential.
Current efforts in the Peoria area are focusing on education, job training, and the support services that will make it possible for families and individuals to become active community members. These efforts include working with employers to make training readily available, recruiting and retaining a skilled workforce, removing the barriers to workforce participation, and most importantly, working together to make the goal of self-reliance attainable for all.
By fostering an environment of teamwork and mutual support, we’ll be able to provide the needed strength that will help individuals work through their hardships and make a difference for themselves and others. IBI
