First there was Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, with its long history marking the start of the holiday shopping season. Then came Cyber Monday—a marketing term for the Monday after Thanksgiving—which first came about in 2005. Small Business Saturday made its debut in 2010, marking the Saturday after Thanksgiving as a day to celebrate the virtues of the small, locally-owned shops that make our communities strong.
Small Business Saturday falls on November 30 this year—don’t forget to get out and support your favorite local business. Better yet, make shopping local a daily practice and support the places that make our community unique year-round.
Are you tired of the consumerism that comes with the holiday season? Tune in next month for Giving Tuesday (on December 3) and support your favorite nonprofit or charitable cause! PM
