Insuring Success

The New Year holiday is fast approaching and thoughts about what we can do to improve our lives begin to take form. I have never met a New Year’s resolution that I liked or have kept. Trying to change bad or annoying habits takes more than just saying you will—it takes willpower, determination and even stubbornness. Weight loss is the most popular resolution, but one doesn’t need to verbalize the obvious—the visual is plenty. What we need to do is concentrate on how the end results of making and keeping resolutions will impact our quality of life and our family’s quality of life. Instead of resolutions we need to make “to-do” lists.

So here is my advice to help insure a better quality of life for you and your family.

Let’s start with health insurance. If you pay attention to your diet and exercise, you lower your health risks and could safely take a higher deductible and save premium dollars. The goal is to have adequate health insurance but not need to use it. Another goal is to have adequate life insurance because it is the one policy that is guaranteed to be used but without paying a deductible.

There are several things you can do to keep your family safer in your home—carbon-monoxide, smoke and radon detectors can prevent a tragedy. Security systems will allow for discounts on your insurance premium. Homeowner’s insurance is not a maintenance policy so take a good look at any problems you have—such as a roof that needs to be replaced. A roof that begins to leak because of age can cause interior water damage to ceilings. You have coverage for that, but not the roof—that is a maintenance problem.

Driving safely definitely should be on your to-do list— stop bad driving behaviors such as tailgating, speeding and road rage. Good drivers are rewarded with good rates.

If you are in business, your “to-do” is to have your customers’ attention. They keep you in business which will preserve your quality of life. Think about how you interact with people in your daily life. It doesn’t take a list to know we should be kind, polite and friendly. The rewards and benefits are free. tpw
