Congratulations, Girlfriends

Our June issue of The Peoria Woman is always devoted to the winners of the ywca Peoria Leader Luncheon Achievement Awards. These community awards—now in the 28th year—recognize not only women in business, but in education, communications, community service, human rights, the professions, and community-minded young women. Most women are so busy “working” in their careers while balancing their personal time that it comes as a surprise to them that others are watching. To be recognized as a role model is a satisfying validation that we’re making a difference.

Now that I can brag “50 is the new 30” when asked about my age, I believe I’ve also earned the right to confess a few mistakes and offer a few words of advice when asked. Along the way, I’ve been privileged to have had several female mentors to help guide my professional and personal life. Not all of my female acquaintances through the years have become supportive girlfriends, but there are many who’ve shared their stories and listened to mine, and we’ve survived and thrived.

Women, in particular, need to communicate, and we often do that by telling our stories. We can’t wait to share our successes, dreams, and ambitions; to express our disappointments; and sometimes to help solve a crisis. We find female support at work, at daycare, at church, and within our families and neighborhoods. We like to socialize, so we’re more committed to exercise routines, book clubs, and child play dates when planned with a friend. We all need a reality check from time to time, and who better than a trusted girlfriend?

Congratulations to these women selected for their successes. When you think about it, we all need to hear a few happy stories. We need to know how other women succeeded personally and professionally—that life isn’t always perfect and easy. While our paychecks won’t come near to Katie Couric’s, we thank her for reaching and attaining that higher goal. Like a girlfriend, we’ve cheered her on during the worst of times and bad hair days. Take time to share your story…and pat yourself on the back.  TPW
