Facials are great any time of the year. Receiving them in the winter will restore moisture that’s depleted from chapping due to the winter wind, and in the spring and summer, it’ll protect from the sun’s rays. Having a deep cleaning facial when the weather is warmer also will help prevent breakouts due to perspiration. Another great reason for a facial is simply for the relaxation.
Most facials consist of steps similar to the following. The esthetician asks you to lie on the facial bed and relax while listening to soothing music. She covers your eyelids with cotton pads, allowing her to examine the skin under a bright, magnified light. This determines what type of skin you have and which formula to use on your skin. The next step is to prepare the skin for the facial. A makeup dissolver is used to remove any makeup, excess oil, or dirt. An astringent is applied to remove any excess dissolver. Finally, an equalizer or toner is used to balance out the skin’s natural pH level.
A cleanser is used based on your skin type. A moisture positive cleanser will be used if you suffer from dry skin. Oily skin will be cleansed with a decongestant. A combination of the two will be used if needed. A cleansing brush is used in a circular motion around the entire face, helping to clean and prepare for the next step: the reapplication of astringent and equalizer.
Next is the exfoliation of the face. There are many different kinds of exfoliants; which is used is based on the skin’s sensitivity. Exfoliants get deep into the skin’s pores, and the tiny granules extract dirt and oil. When the exfoliation is complete, your face will be rinsed, astringent used, and then another application of equalizer.
Next comes the most enjoyable part: the massage. An oil or lotion is used to massage the face. This reduces pressure, relaxes muscles, and relieves tension. Other ingredients may be mixed with the lotion or oil for added benefits. Some examples include a firming complex, blemish inhibitors, age fighters, and deep hydration. There are even additives for those with broken capillaries. Ingredients used simply for relaxation include yen and yang, lavender, and East Indian sandalwood.
Following a 10-minute massage, a facial mask is used. Your skin type also dictates which mask is right for you. The mask application can be very relaxing, as generous amounts are applied to the face and neck area while lying under a steamer. The mask is removed, and another round of cleansing, astringent, and equalizing is done. The skin is then re-evaluated. At this time, the esthetician determines if any extractions are necessary. A moisturizer is applied to finish your facial.
Your skin will feel amazing after your facial is complete. If you want your skin to stay healthy and keep a warm glow, a facial is recommended every six to eight weeks. TPW
