It’s happened to the best of us. It’s the morning of a big event: the dance, your wedding day, or a major presentation at work. You look in the mirror, and there it is: an obvious breakout. What causes these breakouts, and what can be done to prevent this?
Proper skin care is a combination of good home maintenance regimen, a well-balanced diet, proper hydration, moderate sun and UV exposure, exercise, rest, and professional skin care treatments such as facials. A facial treatment is a cosmetic treatment applied to the face and neck and is generally for preventative or corrective purposes. Some benefits of a facial treatment include relaxation of the muscles, soothing of the nerves, improvement of the circulation, correction of minor skin problems, and promotion of healthy skin.
Some of the most common skin problems that can benefit from a weekly facial are dry skin, oily skin, and blackheads or whiteheads. However, you also must follow a proper skin care regimen at home, which consists of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing in the morning and before bedtime. It’s also essential to find a regimen suitable to your skin type, which you can find at a salon, a cosmetics counter, or your local drugstore.
There are different types of facials that serve different purposes. A basic facial will cleanse, tone, moisturize the skin, and massage facial muscles. An appropriate mask will be applied to either add moisture to dry skin or to dry out oily skin. If you have oily skin or skin that has frequent breakouts or clogged pores, your cosmetologist can perform deep pore cleansing on your skin to pull out dirt and oil from under the skin’s surface. If your skin is dry and flaky, a moisture-positive cleanser can be used not only to cleanse the skin, but to restore hydration as well. If you’re prone to breakout, a blemish inhibitor can be added to your mask. Also, blackheads can be expelled and extracted with a professional blackhead remover. If your face tends to have constant redness, your mask can be customized to counteract the redness. There are also siccative masks for oily skin. This mask has a mineral powder base that draws out oil and impurities from the pores. If you have combination skin, cleansers and masks can be customized and targeted to specific areas of the skin.
Keep in mind, however, that if you have a serious skin disorder or disease, your cosmetologist can’t treat that. Many skin disorders are indicators that there’s an internal problem. Some of these can be corrected with a change in your diet or intake of more water. Hormones also play a huge role in the way your skin looks. For any disorder or disease, you should see a physician or dermatologist for proper treatment. But for your everyday skin woes or for a little pampering and refreshing, treating yourself to a facial can be very beneficial and rewarding. TPW
