Celebrating 14 Years of Change--And Consistency
When you stop to think about it, like her city, she is the "All-American" woman. Classic. Diverse. Industrious. Real. Versatile. Warm. Loyal. Concerned. In the heart of America. She could ask for no better city in which to live, work, and play than Peoria. The 1990s will bring her unparalleled opportunities: opportunities to contribute, to impact, to fulfill dreams, socially, economically, creatively, spiritually. She has earned respect, in career, in community, and in the home. And she has earned the right to relax a little, to be realistic about her responsibilities, whether in the home or on the job. And so we launch The Peoria Woman. We are the communiqué for women in the heart of Illinois. We are busy, but would enjoy a concise and readable periodical devoted to area women like ourselves. -Excerpts from the inaugural issue of The Peoria Woman, January 1990.

This issue celebrates The Peoria Woman’s 14th anniversary. Through the years, we’ve changed the look of the cover (this is our first color cover), grown from the original 16 pages, and expanded our circulation. The Peoria Woman has grown up along with our readers, and a loyal bond has developed between us. I’m still amazed when readers come up to me at a store or restaurant and ask about things shared through my editorials. We’ve gone through many life changes and events. The women who have been interviewed-they now number more than 170-are delighted with the recognition they and their organizations receive as well. A complete listing of previous "cover women" can be found on page 10.

The friendly faces of faithful columnists are easily recognized, such as American Family Insurance Associate Jeanne Buysee, who began writing that first issue. The first cover of The Peoria Woman was designed by a man who thought he knew what professional women wanted. The background was cream, and a vase of roses in shades of red and pink were sitting in a strand of pearls; the logo, The Peoria Woman, was written in a fancy script. That was January 1990. We dropped the pearls and roses after about a year, and now, after 10 years, decided it was time for another change.

It’s been quite a journey. While ownership, editors, production, columns, hairstyles, and even names have changed, The Peoria Woman’s goals have not. We still facilitate communication and networking among area women and women’s organizations. We still furnish information and ideas to busy area women in a concise and timely fashion. We still promote women’s interests and concerns in areas such as business, health, personal growth, family, education, and social concerns. We still give recognition to area women for contributions to the community, business achievement, and charitable activities.

We still proudly promote Peoria women. We’ll do our best to keep up with you through the next decade! TPW
