Preventing Childhood Diseases

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic and dangerous decline in child immunizations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic decline in the number of immunizations administered nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is cause for concern as shelter-in-place policies are lifted. “Immunizations protect children from highly contagious diseases, such as measles,” explains Dr. Jalayne Lapke, professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria. “Children who are not immunized are at risk of contracting diseases which are highly preventable with available vaccines.”

The CDC recommends that children get 14 different vaccinations, protecting against 19 different pathogens. Dr. Lapke also encourages parents to maintain well child visits with their primary care providers—an important part of maintaining good health and identifying any potential barriers to normal growth and development. PM
