Hair & Now

Kiss Your Razor Goodbye

Have you ever thought about how wonderful it would be if you did not have to touch your razor all winter? First, let me tell you a little secret on how you can keep your body hairless without the use of a razor. The secret is waxing.

Personally, coming from a Middle Eastern background, you can just imagine how much hair I have. It seems that the more I shave, the more I have to shave. My legs are only soft for a few hours, and then I get what I call a 5 o’clock shadow on my legs. Then I discovered waxing, and it is the best thing I have ever done. Now my legs and underarms are soft and hairless for weeks.

There are two types of hair removal: depilation and epilation. Depilation is removal of the hair above the surface of the skin. An example of depilation is shaving. Epilation is when the entire hair strand is removed, including the part below the surface of the skin. An example of epilation is waxing.

Waxing is defined as a temporary method of hair removal, which removes the hair from the root. New hairs will not grow back in the previously waxed area for three to eight weeks. After waxing regularly, the hair will become finer and eventually stop growing in certain areas. Every time you pull a hair strand out, it shocks or insults the papilla, which is the very bottom portion of the hair follicle, which contains the cells that actually form the hair shaft. After insulting the papilla many times in a row, the papilla will eventually stop producing cells to form the hair shaft, and then, little by little, the hair will stop growing back.

Waxing is offered at many salons and spas. The most common areas to wax would include: facial waxing (eyehairandnow brows, lip, chin), legs, arms, underarms, fingers, hands, feet, toes, stomach, back and bikini line. The hair has to be 1/8-1/4 of an inch long in order to be waxed. Waxing is fairly painful, but it is quick, and again, it gets rid of the hair and makes your legs silky smooth for three to eight weeks. It is ideal for pre-teens who are just starting to shave or even for someone who has been shaving for 50 years.

If you would like to kiss your razor goodbye for the winter, then stop into the salon for an hour or two and get waxed. The winter is the perfect time to start waxing, because you are not wearing shorts or skirts every day, so you can grow your hair out. If you start waxing your hair off now, by the time summer comes, you will have less hair and softer legs just in time for swimsuit season. What are you waiting for? Come on in and experience the benefits of waxing for yourself! tpw
