Brow Shaping
When creating a look for our salon’s clients, one of the most important, yet overlooked, pieces of the puzzle is shaping the eyebrows. Just like the shape of a beard or mustache can change the appearance of a man’s face, so can the shape of the eyebrows. The appearance of the eye area is very much controlled by the length, arch, and thickness of the brow.

Discovering the most appropriate shape for your brows without detracting from their natural beauty should be the desired result. Pencil-thin or overly bushy brows are, for the most part, dated looks that can distract rather than enhance your natural beauty. Your stylist can tell you exactly what the most appropriate shape is for your brows, but there are a few general guidelines that are true for most people.

First, draw an imaginary line from the center of each nostril straight up your forehead; this should be the starting point of the brow. Next, starting at the same point on the nostril, draw an imaginary line through the center of your pupil continuing through the brow; this should be the high point of the arch. Finally, draw one more imaginary line from the nostril through the outside corner of the eye and through the brow; this is where the brow should stop. Now, there are always exceptions to these rules. For instance, if someone has very wide-set eyes, it might be a good idea to start the eyebrows a bit more inset. Only a professional can tell for sure what shape is most appropriate for each individual.

If you’re going to tweeze between waxes or if you only tweeze your brows yourself, make sure you’re very careful about it. Tweezed eyebrow hairs do grow back, but it can take awhile. Hairs on different parts of the body grow back at different rates. It takes about 64 days for the eyebrow hair to grow back in after it’s pulled. Sometimes it can be even longer than this if the hairs are in their resting phase, so be patient if you’re trying to grow them back in. Also, the eyebrow hair is sensitive to injury. Repeatedly tweezing them can permanently damage the root, thus preventing the hair from ever growing back.

Ask your stylist about shaping your brows at your next appointment. Most only charge around $10, and it will open up your eyes and face, and really complete your look. tpw
