Insuring Success

New Year a Good Time For Review

Every month I try to think of a way to perk up the exciting topic of insurance for my readers. As I write this, I’m thinking about New Year’s resolutions, and as you read this, you might have broken some already. Maybe if we stop thinking of breaking rules and/or resolutions and concentrate on doing the right thing, life would be a lot easier. I suggest that when it comes to all of your insurance needs, you resolve this year to sit down with your agent and complete a personal insurance review.

An insurance review will give you an opportunity to ask your agent questions like, “Why is my insurance premium so high? We give you all this money and don’t have any claims!” It might be that you’re eligible for more discounts than you’re receiving, so it’s worth the short time it takes.

There are some questions to ask yourself that could make a difference in the coverage you have versus the coverage you need. If you had a car accident or damage to your home, would you be adequately protected under your current coverage? Do you have a current inventory of your personal property? Have you recently purchased jewelry, furs, fine art, laptop computers, firearms, or an outdoor satellite dish? Do you understand what a personal umbrella policy is? Do you have a business in your home, or are you paid to provide child care in your home?

It’s important that you inform your agent if you have a new driver in your household or if your marital status has changed. A review isn’t to find ways to increase your cost for insurance, but to increase your knowledge of the products.

Of course, this next question is really the most important: when was the last time you reviewed your family and financial status to determine whether you have adequate life insurance protection? You might think all of this is a thinly veiled attempt for your agent to sell you additional policies. But remember I said you should concentrate on doing the right thing, and protecting your family is definitely the right thing. Give your agent a call today. TPW
