The Secret to Permanent Weight Loss
Health is functioning at 100 percent of your full potential-not simply being symptom free. There's a big difference between being healthy and being not sick. Dieting isn't the secret to weight loss. The secret is in your metabolism.
Metabolism is dependent upon the amount of muscle you have and the balance of your hormones. Since metabolism occurs primarily in muscle tissue, the more muscle mass you have, the greater chance you have of increasing your metabolism. Your ability to gain and lose weight and to have energy or be fatigued is also dependent on hormones secreted by your pancreas and thyroid. People with slow thyroids have trouble losing weight, get cold easily, and frequently are tired. Thyroid problems don't always show up on blood tests. A simple test for thyroid function is to take your armpit temperature two minutes upon wakening. It should be 97.6 degrees or higher.
The second group of hormones related to weight loss are those secreted by the pancreas. One is insulin, which either takes sugar from the blood stream and puts it into the cells or stores it as fat. The other is glucagon, which takes fat from the body and breaks it down, which results in weight loss.
Our early ancestors consumed less sugar in one year than we now consume in one day. Because of the large amounts of sugar we consume, the pancreas produces more insulin. This can lead to high blood sugar levels and, eventually, type two diabetes. Ideally, eating between four to six small meals a day made up of healthy foods will help control insulin and glucagon levels. Also, try to avoid processed foods that contain no vitamins or minerals and are high in sugar and sodium.
To lose weight you have to be active. The more active you are, the more energy you'll burn. Research shows that walking 30 minutes a day can reduce your body weight by 5 to 7 percent and decrease the risk of many chronic diseases. The primary barrier to exercising is pain. If exercising results in pain, this could be an indication that you aren't physically, muscularly, and posturally balanced.
The secret to losing weight permanently isn't a new diet; it's healthy eating and exercising. Limiting your sugar and processed foods and eating smaller meals throughout the day is a great way to boost your metabolism. The other way is exercising. If pain is stopping you from achieving your weight loss needs, schedule a consultation with your chiropractor to see if she can help you meet your goals. TPW
